A Brief Note On Hurricane Katrina And Its Misfortune For...
Hurricane Katrina and its Misfortune for the Unfortunate Ibrahim Farag University of Louisville Research Question: Inequality has been a topic of discussion in the United Statesââ¬âas well as the vast majority of the worldââ¬âfor a significant period of time now. While there is no denying that inequality exists, I believe that it has become assumed to be the underlying problem in a lot of cases where it doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily apply. There are a number of problems in society that canââ¬â¢t be fixed because the solution is designed around the idea that inequality is the issue, and if people were to identify the true underlying problem in a lot of casesââ¬âsocial classââ¬âthen we can create a solution to address the problem. A particular eventâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Reed clearly emphasizes that in New Orleans, there is clearly ââ¬Å"no lack of racial inequality, or frankly racist ideologyâ⬠(Reed 2006). However, the reason racism was so dramatically deemed the factor responsible for the inequality and injustice, is because ââ¬Å"in the contempo rary United States race is the most familiar language of inequality and injusticeâ⬠(Reed 2006). Meaning race was the easy choice to explain what happened is because in modern U.S. we are used to race being the predominant source of inequality and injustice. In regards to who could return to the city, Reed examines the cityââ¬â¢s proposal of allowing only homeowners to be given leverage and opinions in the rebuilding process. Particularly when examining New Orleansââ¬â¢ population the overwhelming majority of homeowners are not lower class; There is no way of hiding that New Orleans is considerably poor, the poor consists of overwhelmingly black population, and a majority of the black population is amongst the poor. However the authorââ¬â¢s argument is that regardless of race, the reason a majority of the black community was left behind wasnââ¬â¢t simply because they were black, but rather because they were poorââ¬âsimilar to the St. Bernard Parish disaster (Ree d 2006). Hypothesis 2: Racial differences were a bigger factor than class differences on who evacuated before
